My Review

The Best Picture of 1991 is…..”The Silence of the Lambs,” a macabre thriller movie about a young FBI agent who is hunting a serial killer, and seeks advise from another serial killer, who is imprisoned, and also happens to be a psychiatrist. Riveting performances by Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins in these lead roles dominate the screen, with director Jonathan Demme (“Married to the Mob” 1998) steady at the helm, and screenwriter Ted Tally helping out.

The group swept the upper level of the Academy Awards for 1991: Best Picture (Edward Saxon, Kenneth Utt, Ron Bozman), Best Director (Demme), Best Actor (Hopkins), Best Actress (Foster), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Tally). The movie was adapted from the 1988 psychological horror novel of the same name by Thomas Harris.

Co-stars include Scott Glenn, Ted Levine, Roger Corman, Chris Isaak, Anthony Heald, Tracey Walter, Charles Napier, Harry Northup, and Diane Baker as U. S. Senator Ruth Martin. “The Silence of the Lambs” was very successful at the box office for Strong Heart Productions and Orion Pictures. A sequel was released in 2001, with two prequels in 2002 and 2007.

Warning: Some viewers may not care for the reliance on ghoulish subject matter, discussion of violent acts, and disturbing themes which gave “The Silence of the Lambs” an R rating.
