My Review

Director Kenya Barris (tv show “black-ish” 2014-2022) and screenwriter Noah Hill collaborated on a romantic comedy film that also serves as a commentary on ethnic, religious, and race relations in upper-crust Los Angeles called “You People.” The result is some good comedy that has had some negative reviews, but, in the opinion of this column, is fun entertainment. Barris also co-wrote the script with Hill that tells the story of a romance between two Millennials, one being Jewish (played by Hill) and the other a Black Muslim (Lauren London).

This is definitely an ensemble cast that spreads out the comedy and drama between numerous performers, the stand-outs being Eddie Murphy and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. These familiar comedic faces do not disappoint, and help carry the picture with their talents and charismatic personas. The supporting cast includes Nia Long and David Duchovny as their spouses, respectively, and Sam Jay, Travis Bennett, Molly Gordon, Deon Cole, Andrea Savage, Elliot Gould, Rhea Perlman, Mike Epps, Matt Walsh, Hal Linden, and Richard Benjamin.

The watchable “You People” from Netflix had limited release in theaters in January, 2023, and was made available for streaming on Netflix shortly thereafter.
