My Review

Producers Ridley Scott and Tony Scott had a huge dud on their hands with their television miniseries “World Without End,” based on the 2007 novel by Ken Follett. It was a sequel to “Pillars of the Earth,” a superior 2010 miniseries also based on a Follett tome (from 1989). Set in England in the 14th Century, it follows Edward III leading the nation into the Hundred Years’ War with France and Europe facing the bubonic plague pandemic called the Black Death.

Director Michael Caton-Jones, teleplay author John Pielmeier, and the Scotts did a sloppy job in creating this miniseries, a seven hour television movie with bad writing, a muddled plot, and flat, unmemorable characters. It’s extremely difficult to remember who was who and to follow what was going on.

The cast includes Cynthia Nixon, Miranda Richardson, Ben Chaplin, Peter Firth, Charlotte Riley, Rupert Evans, Tom Cullen, and Blake Ritson as King Edward III.

“World Without End” might be renamed “Miniseries Without End.” This eight episode bomb was consigned to viewing in the U. S. on the obscure Reelz Channel in September of 2012.
