My Review

“Woodlawn” is a sports drama about a bi-racial high school football team in the early 1970’s Deep South which had many players converting to Christianity. This had the effect of easing racial tensions in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1973, in the midst of desegregation and the Civil Rights Movement.

Spot-on directing by Andrew Erwin and Jon Erwin (“Mom’s Night Out” 2014), with a well written screenplay by Quinton Peeples and Jon Erwin, gave this film a solid story and positive message to address a major problem in society. The movie was adapted from “Woodlawn: One Dream. One Hope. One Way,” a 2015 autobiography by Todd Gerelds and Mark Shlabach.

The cast delivered good performances including Sean Astin, Sherri Shepard, Jon Voight, Kevin Sizemore, C. Thomas Howell, Nic Bishop, Caleb Castillo, Brett Rice, Brando Eaton, Virginia Williams, Lance E. Nichols, Francesca Battistelli, and DeVon Franklin in an uncredited role as The Preacher. “Woodlawn” was a successful faith-based movie at the box office from executive producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett, Crescent City Pictures, Lightworkers Media, and Pure Flix Entertainment.
