“Wonka” is another version of the story of chocolatier Willy Wonka, a character from 1964 novel by Roald Dahl, and the 1971 and 2005 movies. This one is a musical, solidly directed by Paul King (“Paddington” 2014), who also co-wrote the screenplay with Simon Farnaby. It is a delightful mix of comedy suitable for the entire family, marvelous sets and special effects, and catchy original music by Joby Talbot and Neil Hannon.
The talented cast is headed by Timothee Chalamet, who seems to handle drama, comedy, and singing & dancing equally well. Co-stars include Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Colman, Jim Carter, Hugh Grant, Rowan Atkinson, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Matthew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, and Natasha Rothwell as Pipper Benz.
“Wonka” has been successful at the box office this Holiday season for Village Roadshow Pictures, Heyday Films, The Roald Dahl Story Company, Domain Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
