My Review

Doris Day’s final appearance in a feature film in theatrical release was the romantic comedy “With Six You Get Eggroll.” (Her first movie was 1948’s “Romance on the High Seas.”) This wholesome family comedy featured a talented cast including Brian Keith, who plays Day’s love interest, Barbara Hershey as his daughter, and John Findlater, Richard Steele, Jimmy Bracken playing her three sons. The blended family theme was popular at the time, with Lucille Ball’s “Yours, Mine, and Ours” out in theaters the same year, and “The Brady Bunch” debuting on television in 1969.

The supporting cast included Pat Carroll, Herb Voland, George Carlin, Alice Ghostley, Elaine Devry, Vic Tayback, Jackie Joseph, William Christopher, Allan Melvin, Jamie Farr, and the rock group The Grass Roots as themselves. Director Howard Morris (“Who’s Minding the Mint?” 1967) and screenwriters Gwen Bagni, R. S. Allen, Paul Dubov, and Harvey Bullock did their jobs well enough to make everyone look good, especially considering “With Six You Get Eggroll” was CBS’s film unit Cinema Center Films’ first theatrical motion picture, and allowing a major star like Doris Day go out on top.
