My Review

Independent filmmakers Calvin Skaggs and David Van Taylor produced and directed a very insightful look into conservative evangelical Christian involvement in politics. “With God on Our Side: George W. Bush and the Rise of the Religious Right in America” is generally unbiased and objective in it coverage of this sensitive and controversial topic.

The producers go over a history of evangelicalism in America, and trace modern-day involvement to the 1960 Protestant ministers’ meeting with Democratic presidential candidate John Kennedy, quizzing him about his Roman Catholic faith. It also covered Billy Graham’s support of Richard Nixon, a turn by evangelical voters to Jimmy Carter after Watergate, Jerry Falwell forming the Moral Majority in 1979, massive evangelical support of Ronald Reagan, Pat Robertson’s candidacy for President in 1988, and George W. Bush’s close-up witnessing his father’s defeat for re-election in 1992, and Bush’s personal faith.

“With God on our Side: George W. Bush and the Rise of the Religious Right in America” is an absorbing and engrossing documentary that first aired on the Sundance Channel in 2004. Interviewees include Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Cal Thomas, Tim LaHaye, and others, with clips of Presidents John Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush.
