Carrie Fisher takes a look at her famous family and various emotional problems in “Wishful Drinking.” This entertaining and often informative documentary was filmed by HBO from her stage show, directed by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato.
One highlight of the show is a “charts & graphs” segment where she demonstrates the complexity of her daughter dating the grandson of Mike Todd and Elizabeth Taylor, who married her father Eddie Fisher after a very public affair that broke up his marriage to her mother Debbie Reynolds. Complicated material, without a doubt.
Fisher also has a frank discussion about her struggles with alcoholism, manic depression, and the effect of “Star Wars” on her life. An interesting extra on the DVD is an extended interview with Reynolds, who reveals, among other things, that George Lucas has been a valued friend to their family over the years.
