My Review

“Wild Wild West” is an action film where U. S. President Ulysses S. Grant learns that a crazy inventor is out to assassinate him, and he reaches out to two military men who attempt to help him. The bottom line is that this movie is a complete disaster with horrible writing, bad acting, and mediocre production values, except maybe for special effects. Director Barry Sonnenfeld (“Get Shorty” 1995) and his team of screenwriters completely misfired on all levels with this project. It is a remake of the popular CBS television series “The Wild Wild West” (1965-1969).

The beleaguered cast includes Will Smith as Army Captain Jim West, Kevin Kline in dual roles as U. S. Marshall Artemus Gordon and President Ulysses Grant, and Kenneth Branagh as Dr. Arliss Loveless, the heavy of the piece. Co-stars include Selma Hayek, Ted Levine, M. Emmet Walsh, Rodney A. Grant, Ian Abercrombie, Frederique van der Wal, Debra Christofferson, and Bai Ling as Mae Lee East. “Wild Wild West” was a big flop at the box office for producer Jon Peters and Warner Bros. Pictures.

“Wild Wild West” was nominated for eight Golden Raspberry Awards, winning five, and also nominated for ten Stinkers Bad Movie Awards, winning four. The film won the “Worst Picture” in both competitions. Robert Conrad, who played Jim West in the television program, collected in person the five Razzies the film won to express his objections to the failed motion picture.
