My Review

Stunning performances abound in the classic film “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor play a college professor and his wife who invite their friends, another couple played by Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis, over for drinks after a university faculty meeting. Little do the friends know they are about to be drawn into a black hole of psycho drama with George and Martha. Outstanding performances from the cast!

Director Mike Nichols, in his motion picture debut, did an excellent job at the helm of this drama, based on the 1962 play by Edward Albee. The excellent screenplay was penned by Ernest Lehman. The movie was nominated for thirteen Academy Awards, winning five: Best Actress (Taylor), Best Supporting Actress (Dennis), Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Costume Design. Burton and Lemmon were also nominated for Oscars. “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” was a box office success for Warner Bros. Pictures.
