My Review

“While You Were Sleeping” is a romantic comedy movie about a lonely transit worker who has a crush on a handsome commuter whom she sees daily. On Christmas Day, she rescues him from an oncoming train, takes him to the hospital, where his family mistakenly thinks she is his fiancee. She does not have the nerve to correct them, so the results are comedy and drama proceeding from there.

The star of the show is Sandra Bullock, being her usual charming self in the lead role. This was her first big part after her breakthrough movie “Speed” the previous year. Co-stars include Bill Pullman, Peter Gallagher, Peter Boyle, Glynis Johns, Jack Warden, Jason Bernard, Michael Rispoli, Ally Walker, and Monica Keena.

Director Jon Turteltaub (“Cool Runnings” 1993) and screenwriters Daniel G. Sullivan and Fredric Lebow all put high quality production values into the film, which admittedly is a bit formulaic and predictable but very watchable and entertaining. “While You Were Sleeping” was a big hit at the box office for Hollywood Pictures, Caravan Pictures, Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, and The Walt Disney Company.
