My Review

“Where the Wild Things Are” is the off-beat story of a nine-year-old boy named Max who travels on a boat to an island filled with strange and mysterious creatures. They soon make Max their king, bringing on all kinds of drama and some comedy. The strange story was adequately directed by Spike Jonze (“Being John Malkovich” 1999), who also co-wrote the screenplay with Dave Eggers, adapted from a 1963 children’s book by Maurice Sendak.

The film does contain a dark tone, especially for children, and a thin storyline, and pockets here and there with boring dialogue, but Jonze gave Max and the creatures a warm relationship that seems to shine through the movies’ deficiencies. The creatures were actors fitted into “animatronic” suits designed and created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. The human cast was headed by Max Records, delivering a believable performance as Max, who was in most scenes. Others include Catherine Keener, Mark Ruffalo, Pepita Emmerichs, Steve Mouzakis, Max Pfeifer, and Ryan Corr.

The voice cast includes James Gandolfini, Lauren Ambrose, Chris Cooper, Forrest Whitaker, Catherine O’Hara, Paul Dano, and Spike Jonze. The suit performers include Angus Sampson and Vincent Crowley. With a very large production budget of $100 million, “Where the Wild Things Are” only broke even at the box office for producer Tom Hanks, The Playtone Company, Legendary Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures, Wild Things Productions, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
