My Review

Four Midwestern college coeds head south to Fort Lauderdale for spring break in “Where the Boys Are.” The light and breezy mood of the film takes a decidedly serious turn when one of the girls is attacked. The date rape subplot was skillfully handled by director Henry Levin (“Journey to the Center of the Earth” 1959) and screenwriter George Wells, who based this project on the 1960 novel of the same name by Glendon Swarthout.

The four young actresses in the principal roles were simply marvelous: Paula Prentiss, Dolores Hart, Yvette Mimieux, and Connie Francis, who sang the title song. “Where the Boys Are” was a big hit on the music charts for Francis, written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield. Co-stars include George Hamilton, Jim Hutton, Frank Gorshin, Vito Scotti, Barbara Nichols, Maggie Pierce, and Chill Wills as the town police captain.

“Where the Boys Are” was a success in theaters for Euterpe Productions and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. A remake was released in 1984 called “Where the Boys Are ’84” starring Lisa Hartman and Lorna Luft. It was a failure with critics and a flop at the box office for TriStar Pictures.
