My Review

“Where Eagles Dare” is a classic World War II action film starring Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. The story is about a joint British-American attempt to rescue a U. S. Army brigadier general who was captured by the Germans.

There are few faults to find in this wonderful MGM production. Tight direction by Brian G. Hutton (“Wild Seed” 1965) and a well penned screenplay by Alistair MacLean make the 155 minute running time fly by. It was adapted from MacLean’s 1967 novel of the same name.

Production values are top rate with breathtaking stunt work coordinated by Yakima Canutt, a great musical score by Ron Goodwin, and stunning cinematography by Arthur Ibbetson with the filming in Austria and Bavaria.

Co-stars include Mary Ure, Robert Beatty, Patrick Wymark, Michael Hordern, William Squire, and Ingrid Pitt. The watchable “Where Eagles Dare” was a hit at the box office for Winkast Film Productions and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
