My Review

“When Willie Comes Marching Home” is a comedy-drama film about a young man who enlists in the Army Air Force after Pearl Harbor. He longs for action as a pilot, but is assigned as an instructor at a base near his hometown. This “safe spot” as the war rages draws some derision from his friends. Director John Ford (“Stagecoach” 1939) does well here at the movie’s helm, from a winning script by Richard Sale, Mary Loos, and Sy Gomberg.

Dan Dailey fits smoothly into this leading role. His nice-guy persona comes across pleasantly enough on the big screen. Co-stars include Corinne Calvet, Collen Townsend, William Demarest, Jimmy Lydon, Lloyd Corrigan, and Evelyn Varden. Appearing in uncredited roles are Mae Marsh, Vera Miles, Alan Hale Jr., Paul Harvey, and Whit Bissell. The watchable “When Willie Comes Marching Home” was a modest success in theatrical release for 20th Century Fox.
