My Review

Humphrey Bogart starred in a comedy film in 1955 – with mixed results. “We’re No Angels” fell flat on its face and is mostly a dull affair, despite a good premise and help from director Michael Curtiz, who worked with Boggie on “Casablanca” (1942). It is the story of three escaped convicts who take shelter with a local family on Christmas Eve, and plan on robbing them the next day. They change their minds after spending Christmas dinner with them.

Co-stars with Humphrey Bogart include Aldo Rey and Peter Ustinov as his fellow jail birds, Joan Bennett and Leo G. Carroll as the helpful couple, Gloria Talbert as their daughter, Basil Rathbone as a local store owner, as well as John Baer, Lea Penman, John Smith, Torben Meyer, and Paul Newlan as the port captain. “We’re No Angels” made virtually no profit at the box office for Paramount Pictures. The film was billed as a Christmas comedy when it was released on July 7, 1955. This boring movie was definitely not Christmas in July!
