My Review

“Waikiki: Riding the Waves of Change” documents the history of Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii, concentrating on the stories of the famed beach boys, locals who instructed tourists in the sport of surfing.

This 53-minute documentary film from Pu’wawai Productions of Honolulu shows how Waikiki grew from a rural village in the shadow of Diamond Head to a major world-wide tourist destination clogged with traffic jams and countless high rise hotels.

Despite the dramatic changes to this section of the island of Oahu, producers-directors Eric Jordan and Caroline Yacoe, through interviews with numerous beach boys, show how the spirit of aloha still survives on Waikiki Beach.

Archival footage of original beach boy Duke Kahanamoku and his brothers is shown. He not only mingled with tourists in Waikiki, but is shown bringing surfing to California and Australia. He is still referred to as “The Ambassador of Aloha.”

This quote from veteran beach boy Conrad Canha sums up the lifestyle of the beach boys: “Na Keiki O Ke Kai.” “We are children of the sea.”
