My Review

“Venom” is Sony Pictures’ first movie in its Marvel Universe, or Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, depending on who you talk to, is a big hit at the box office but less than well received by critics due to a confusing plot, poorly written dialogue, and mediocre performances. Director Ruben Fleischer (“Gangster Squad” 2013), screenwriters Jeff Pinkner, Scott Rosenberg, Kelly Marcel, and Sony Pictures were basically rewarded by movie audiences for putting together a mindless action-adventure picture. Sony’s collaborations with Marvel Studios seems to lack the quality control of Marvel projects they have under the control of The Walt Disney Company.

The under-achieving cast includes Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Jenny Slate, Melora Walters, and Reid Scott, well known as Dan Egan of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ sitcom “Veep.” Woody Harrelson made a cameo as Cletus Kasady in the middle of the closing credits.

Venom made his big screen debut in 2007’s “Spider-Man 3,” and, with the box office bonanza of this “Venom,” the plans of Sony PIctures, Columbia Pictures, and Marvel Entertainment are for him to be featured in sequels.
