“Utopia” is the final film of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy telling the story of Stan receiving an inheritance of a south Pacific island from his uncle, traveling there with Oliver, and all kinds of complications arising. French director Leo Joannon did a poor job at the helm with unfocused direction, and the team of screenwriters giving him mediocre material to work with.
Co-stars include Suzy Delair, Max Elloy, Suzet Mais, Adriano Rimoldi, Luigi Tosi, Claude May, et al. “Utopia” was not a success in theatrical release for Fortezza Films (Italy) and Franco London Films (France). “Utopia” was titled “Atoll K” in France and Italy and “Robinson Crusoeland” in the United Kingdom.
Their last film “Utopia” was not the best way to go out for Laurel and Hardy, whose partnership on stage, screen, and television last from 1921 in silent pictures to 1955. They appeared in 107 short films and feature films, numerous personal appearances, and one stint on American television as guest stars on Ralph Edwards’ “This is Your Life” (1954).
