Director Mario Van Peebles (“New Jack City” 1991) had his heart in the right place in his attempt to depict the bravery of our Navy men in World War II. However, “USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage” suffers from terrible writing, confusing plots and subplots, bad special effects, terrible acting, and astonishingly inaccurate portrayal of period detail.
Nicolas Cage was a terrible choice to play Captain Charles McVay. Cage does not have the screen presence, the persona, or the acting ability to pull off a major role such as this. His range as an actor is very limited. The rest of the cast is not much better: Tom Sizemore, Thomas Jane, James Remar, Matt Lanter, Brian Presley, Cody Walker, and Mandela Van Peebles, son of the director.
Screenwriters Cam Cannon and Richard Rionda Del Castro contributed their mediocre skills to “USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage,” an independent production that was a major flop at the box office.
