“Underclassman” is a comedy-action film starring Nick Cannon as a young LAPD cop who aspires to be a detective like his late father, but is held back by his boss who thinks he is not ready based on his reckless and immature behavior. The acting by Cannon and others is satisfactory, but the poorly written screenplay by Brent Goldberg and David Wagner and incompetent direction by Marcos Siega make this nothing more than a B film.
The supporting cast includes Roselyn Sanchez, Kelly Hu, Ian Gomez, Shawn Ashmore, Johnny Lewis, Cheech Marin, and Hugh Bonneville, who would later go on to fame and fortune as the Earl of Grantham in the very popular UK television series “Downton Abbey” (2010-2015). To no one’s surprise, “Underclassman” underachieved at the box office, much to the chagrin of Tapestry Films and Miramax Films.
