“Twister” is a disaster film about a college professor and her underfunded team of students preparing a ground-breaking tornado data gathering devise developed by her estranged husband. When it is revealed that a privately funded rival is about to join the tornado-hunting season, the hubby rejoins the group. The heavy drama proceeds from there, with passable direction by Jan de Bont (“Speed” 1994) from an adequate script by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin.
The stars of the show are Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton as the tornado hunters, with Jami Gertz as his girl friend and Cary Elwes as the well-heeled rival. Co-stars include Alan Ruck, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Lois Smith, Sean Whalen, Scott Tompson, Joey Slotnick, Anthony Rapp, and Jake Busey. The watchable “Twister” was a big hit at the box office for producers Michael Crichton and Kathleen Kennedy, Amblin Entertainment, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Universal Pictures.
“Twister” was nominated for two Oscars: Best Sound and Best Visual Effects. It won two Stinkers Bad Movie Awards: Worst Supporting Actress (Gertz) and Worst Screenplay for a Film Grossing Over $100 Million Using Hollywood Math. “Twister” also won a single Golden Raspberry Award for the Worst Written Film Grossing Over $100 Million. An inferior sequel “Twisters” was released in 2024.
