My Review

Walt Disney Animation came out with one of its biggest box office bombs in history with “Treasure Planet.” This effort from producers-directors-screenwriters Ron Clements and John Musker suffers from weak characters, ho-hum storylines, and confusing visualization with boats floating through outer space. It is loosely based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 novel “Treasure Island.” One positive feature of this film is the colorful special effects in 3D.

The voice cast includes Joseph Gordon Levitt, Brian Murray, Emma Thompson, David Hyde Pierce, Martin Short, Michael Wincott, Laurie Metcalf, Roscoe Lee Brown, Patrick McGoohan, Dane Davis, Peter Cullen, Tony Jay, Jane Carr, Corey Burton, Mike McShane, Roger Bumpass, and Jack Angel.

Even this talented cast could not rescue this ship wreck of a motion picture. “Treasure Planet” is the 43rd Walt Disney Animated Feature, costing $140 million to produce and only made $110 million in worldwide release. Sad news for Walt Disney Feature Animation, Walt Disney Pictures, and Buena Vista Pictures Distribution. However, it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
