“Topper Takes a Trip” is a sequel to “Topper” (1937), continuing the story of Marion Kirby (Constance Bennett), who tries to gain entry into Heaven but is told she must do a good deed on Earth. That good deed is to reunite a divorced couple, Cosmo and Clara Topper (Roland Young, Billie Burke). The madcap comedy proceeds from there, well directed by Norman Z. MacLeod (“Pennies from Heaven” 1936) from a good screenplay by Jack Jevne, Eddie Moran, and Corey Ford.
Returnees from the original includes Bennett, Young, Burke, and Alan Mowbray. Verree Teasdale, Franklin Pangborn, Alexander D’Arcy, Spencer Charters, Irving Pritchel, and Asta as the canine spirit Mr. Atlas are among the new cast members in this sequel. The watchable and entertaining “Topper Takes a Trip” was successful Depression Era escapist programming for producer Hal Roach and United Artists. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Special Effects. A third and final film in the series was “Topper Returns” (1941).
