My Review

“Tolkien” is a dry and dull film about the early life of author J. R. R. Tolkien that only the most die hard fans of his work would appreciate. Finnish director Dome Karukoski was in charge of this project, most likely one of the few major motion pictures in English that he has worked on. Writers David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford penned the uninspired screenplay. Where was producer Peter Chernin? He’s a bean counter, not really an expert in film production.

The cast seemed to be performing on autopilot. Nicholas Hoult robotically performed the title role, with Lily Collins as his girl friend, Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Craig Roberts as his friends. Recognizable veterans Colm Meaney and Derek Jacobi also populated the picture.

“Tolkien” was the first movie project produced by Fox Searchlight Pictures after 20th Century Fox as purchased by The Walt Disney Company. Some good lessons here for Disney and Searchlight as they contemplate making more artsy pictures that are a bomb at the box office.
