“To Catch a Thief” is another masterpiece from Alfred Hitchcock, filled with mystery, thrills, chills, a few spills, and even romance. There is not as much suspense in this film from the Master of Suspense, as it tells the story of a retired jewel thief residing in the South of France, who comes under suspicion when a series of burglaries occurs in town. He works to prove his innocence by aiding the authorities to catch the real burglar.
The star of the show is Cary Grant as the retired cat burglar John Robie. Grant has great chemistry with co-star Grace Kelly, a tourist in town in possession of lots of jewels. The supporting cast includes Jesse Royce Landis, John Williams, Charles Vanel, Brigitte Auber, Jean Martinelli, and Georgette Anys as the housekeeper.
“To Catch a Thief” was a success at the box office for producer Alfred Hitchcock and Paramount Pictures. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, winning one for Best Cinematography (Robert Burks). Losing out were Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design (Edith Head).
During the filming of “To Catch a Thief,” Grace Kelly met Prince Rainier of Monaco, and they were married the next year. This was her last film of three with Hitch, with her final career movie being “High Society” (1956) with Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. Princess Grace of Monaco passed away in 1982 from a stroke while driving in the hills above Monaco, with her daughter Princess Stephanie as a passenger. Stephanie survived with a concussion.
