Jonathan Frakes has carved out quite a directorial career for himself after his seven years as Will Riker on television’s “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (1987-1994). One of his projects has been “Thunderbirds,” a live-action film based on the tv show of the same name that ran from 1964-1966.
The story has a criminal group capturing the Thunderbird captain and his sons and then carrying out crimes that are blamed on the Thunderbirds. Director Frakes and screenwriters William Osborne and Michael McCullers keep the action moving swiftly, but with little originality or interesting drama. The film probably does remain loyal to the 1960’s series in the sense that it is very one-dimensional.
The cast includes Ben Kingsley, Vanessa Hudgens, Bill Paxton, Anthony Edwards, Brady Corbet, Sophia Miles, Ron Cook, Philip Winchester, Dominic Colenso, Lex Shrapnel, Rose Keegan, and Genie Francis. “Thunderbirds” from Working Title Films, StudioCanal, and Universal Pictures was a massive flop at the box office.
