My Review

“Thoroughly Modern Millie” is a musical romantic comedy about a young woman from Kansas who moves to New York City looking for a job and a wealthy husband. The madcap comedic romp was expertly directed by George Roy Hill and stars Julie Andrews. The pair was reunited from working on the film “Hawaii” the previous year.

Producer Ross Hunter hired a fantastic cast to act out the marvelous screenplay by Richard Morris. Co-stars with Andrews include Mary Tyler Moore, James Fox, John Gavin, Carol Channing, Jack Soo, Pat Morita, Philip Ahn, Buddy Schwab, and Beatrice Lillie, a veteran actress in her final movie role in a career that began in 1926 in a silent film called “Exit Smiling” for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

The delightful musical score won the Academy Award for Elmer Bernstein, one of seven Oscar nods for the film. The songs were arranged and conducted by Andre Previn. “Thoroughly Modern Millie” was a huge hit for Ross Hunter Productions and Universal Pictures.
