My Review

“This Sporting Life” stars Richard Harris as a Yorkshire, England, blue-collar worker turned professional rugby player. This first starring role for Harris earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. (His co-star Rachel Roberts, who played his wife, was also received an Academy Award nod for Best Actress.) Director Lindsay Anderson put together a watchable movie that moved rapidly for a film with a two-hour-and-fourteen minute running time. The screenplay by David Storey was adapted from his own 1960 novel of the same name.

Co-stars include William Hartnell (who would go on to star as the very first “Doctor Who” the next year), Alan Badel, Colin Blakely, Jack Watson, Arthur Lowe, Anne Cunningham, Katherine Parr, and Tom Clegg. Though an enjoyable view on DVD these days, “This Sporting Life” was a flop at the box office in 1963 for Independent Artists and Rank Organisation.
