“Thelma & Louise” has everything a movie fan could hope for: Action, adventure, drama, comedy, romance, and even a gal-pal road trip. Producer-director Ridley Scott (“Alien” 1979) did a superb job in bringing Callie Khouri’s excellent screenplay to life.
Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis deliver electrifying performances in the title roles. One cannot imagine other female stars filling these parts, which is something of a feminist version of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” The supporting cast includes Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Christopher McDonald, Stephen Tobolowsky, Timothy Carhart, Lucinda Jenney, Jason Beghe, Marco St. John, and Brad Pitt in his break-through role as J. D. He went on to super-stardom after this film.
“Thelma & Louise” was a hit in theatrical release for Scott Free Productions, Percy Main Productions, Pathe Entertainment, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning one for Best Screenplay. Davis and Sarandon were both nominated for Best Actress. Hans Zimmer composed the musical score.
