My Review

“The Young Victoria” is an interesting look at the early life of Britain’s Queen Victoria. Director Jean-Marc Vallee (“Loser Love” 1999) and screenwriter Julian Fellowes created a classy period piece that depicts how the relationship between Victoria and her new husband moved from royal strangers to intimate husband and wife.

Emily Blunt was perfect in the title role, giving Victoria the right balance of feistiness and dignity. Rupert Friend did well as Prince Albert of the German state of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The supporting cast includes Paul Bettany, Miranda Richardson, Jim Broadbent, Thomas Kretchschmann, Jesper Christensen, Harriet Walter, and Julian Glover.

Cinematographer Hagen Bogdanski framed the movie beautifully, filmed at numerous historic locations around England. It was nominated for three Oscars, winning one for Best Costume Design. “The Young Victoria” lost money in theatrical release for producers Martin Scorsese and Sarah Ferguson and GK Films.
