“The Young Messiah” is a Biblical drama depicting seven-year-old Jesus residing in Egypt with Mary and Joseph. Director Cyrus Nowrasteh (“The Day Reagan Was Shot” 2001) put together a look at the early life of Jesus Christ that has fair production values and acceptable performances but plays fast-and-loose with the facts of His life. Nowrasteh uses extra-Biblical sources for material for the dull screenplay, which he co-wrote with Betsy Giffen Nowrasteh. It was based on the 2005 book “Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt” by Anne Rice.
The errors in the film are too numerous to go into here, but include a long stay in Egypt, performance of miracles by young Jesus, and statements never made by the Messiah of Israel. The cast includes Adam Greaves-Neal as Jesus, Sara Lazzaro as Mary, Vincent Walsh as Joseph, Jonathan Bailey as Herod, Rory Keenan as Satan, Lee Boardman as a Roman squad leader, and Sean Bean as Severus. The unwatchable and boring “The Young Messiah” was a flop at the box office for producer Chris Columbus, Ocean Blue Entertainment, 1492 Pictures, CJ Entertainment, Hyde Park International, and Focus Features.
