My Review

“The Yearling” is a family western movie about a lonely ten-year-old boy who befriends a orphaned fawn. The young deer has a tendency to get into mischief, earning the disapproval of the boy’s mother. The father is more tolerant of the situation, with the drama proceeding from there. Director Clarence Brown (“National Velvet” 1944) put together a high quality and emotional story with good writing by Paul Osborn. It was adapted from the 1938 novel of the same name by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings.

The cast is headed by Gregory Peck and Jane Wyman as the parents and Claude Jarman Jr. as their son. Wonderful performances by these pros! It is no wonder that all three are Oscar winners. Co-stars include Chill Wills, Forrest Tucker, June Lockhart, Clem Bevans, Margaret Wycherly, Henry Travers, and Jeff York. This Technicolor movie was popular at the box office for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It won three Oscars out of eight nominations: Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and an Academy Juvenile Award to Claude Jarman Jr.
