My Review

Hugh Jackman has had his best appearance yet as “The Wolverine,” the second film following 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and the sixth installment of the X-Men’s film series. This movie is set almost completely in Japan, starting in 1945 when Logan is in a prison camp near Nagasaki and saves a Japanese officer from the atomic blast. The story then moves to “present day” when Logan is living in the Yukon territory of Canada.

Jackman seems comfortable in the Wolverine role after the numerous reprises of the character. The supporting cast is simply terrific including Hiroyuki Sanada, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima, Will Yun Lee, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Haruhiko Yamanouchi, Brian Tee, and Famke Janssen as Jean Grey in flashbacks. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen make cameo appearances.

Director James Manigold (“Walk the Line” 2005) seems to have handled things well at the helm of the picture, with a well-written screenplay by Mark Bomback and Scott Frank. “The Wolverine” from Marvel Entertainment and 20th Century Fox was a success at the box office.
