My Review

“The Witches of Eastwick” is a supernatural comedy about three women in Eastwick, Rhode Island, who are unaware that they are witches. They receive a wakeup call when a devilish character comes to town and becomes involved with all three. The sparks fly when a back-and-forth rivalry starts between the three friends and the visitor. Director George Miller (“Mad Max” 1979) crafted a witty and entertaining comedy, albeit predictable, from the formulaic screenplay by Michael Cristofer. It was adapted from the 1984 novel of the same name by John Updike.

The star of the show is Jack Nicholson as the mysterious visitor to Eastwick. He is always at his best in these “naughty” roles. (Beware of his blue language.) The three friends are portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer, Susan Sarandon, and Cher. The trio do a marvelous job in each role, and look good, as they are in their prime in this mid-1980’s production. Co-stars include Veronica Cartwright, Richard Jenkins, Carel Struychen, and Keith Jochim and Becca Lish as Mr. and Mrs. Neff.

“The Witches of Eastwick” was popular at the box office for producers Jon Peters and Peter Gruber and Warner Bros. Pictures. John Williams composed and conducted the excellent music score. It was nominated for two Oscars: Best Original Score and Best Sound.
