Ronald Reagan and Doris Day team up in “The Winning Team.” The athletic Reagan is his usual winsome self as famed major league pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander (1887-1950), Doris Day plays his wife, and Frank Lovejoy hits the mark as Rogers Hornsby. Co-stars include Eve Miller, James Millican, Russ Tamblyn, and Gordon Jones. Reagan and Day previously appeared together in “Storm Warning” (1951).
Director Lewis Seiler (“Guadalcanal Diary” 1943) capably handled this project, from a good script by Ted Sherdeman, Seeleg Lester, and Merwin Gerard. The story involves how Alexander’s bout with alcoholism ruined his career with the Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs, and his subsequent comeback with the St. Louis Cardinals. “The Winning Team” was a modest success in theaters for Warner Bros. Pictures.
