My Review

James Cagney stars as an unemployed Broadway producer who is asked to stage a show with his girl friend (Virginia Mayo) at the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, about 57 miles north of New York City, on the Hudson River. Director Roy Del Ruth (“The Babe Ruth Story” 1948) was masterful at the helm of this entertaining musical comedy movie, helped out by an excellent screenplay by Irving Wallace, Charles Hoffman, and John Monks Jr. In addition, Ray Heindorf was nominated for an Oscar for Best Musical Scoring.

Although James Cagney and Virginia Mayo have top billing, it is Doris Day and Gordon MacRae who steal the show, music-wise. The bigger talents Day and MacRae perform the best of the songs written by Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn. Co-stars include Gene Nelson, Alan Hale Jr., Roland Winters, Wilton Graff, Jerome Cowan, and James Dobson. The winsome and watchable musical romp “The West Point Story” was a success at the box office for Warner Bros. Pictures.
