My Review

“The War of the Roses” is a black comedy movie about a wealthy couple whose marriage disintegrates into a tit-for-tat battle over the mansion they both occupy. The story in fact goes to extremes but expert direction by Danny De Vito keeps the storyline on track and believable for the nearly two hour duration of the film. The screenplay by Michael J. Leeson is very well written, adapted from a 1981 novel by Warren Adler.

Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner are marvelous as the attractive but bitter couple, Oliver and Barbara Rose, battling everything out, in front of their friends and family or when alone. Danny De Vito also co-stars as their friend and Oliver’s divorce lawyer. This is the trio’s third film together, following “Romancing the Stone” (1984) and sequel “Jewel of the Nile” (1985). Co-stars include Sean Astin, Heather Fairfield, Marianne Sagebrecht, G. D. Spradlin, Peter Donat, David Wohl, Shirley Mitchell, Peter Hansen, and Roy Brocksmith.

The watchable “The War of the Roses” was successful in theatrical release for Gracie Films and 20th Century Fox.
