My Review

“The Vikings” is a typical Hollywood swashbuckling-spectacle movie from the 1950’s. An all-star cast headed by Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh tells the story of a feud in a Viking royal family, well directed by Richard Fleischer (“20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” 1954) from a screenplay by Calder Willingham. It was adapted from the 1951 novel “The Viking” by Edison Marshall.

Co-stars with Curtis and Leigh includes Kirk Douglas, Ernest Borgnine, James Donald, Alexander Knox, Maxine Audley, Frank Thring, Eileen Way, and Orson Welles as the narrator. The stunning scenery of Norway served as a backdrop for the film, with Jack Cardiff in charge of the marvelous cinematography. “The Vikings” was a big hit at the box office for Curtleigh Productions, Brynaprod, and United Artists.

This was Curtis and Leigh’s fourth of six films together, in a marriage that lasted from 1951-1962. Their daughter Jamie Leigh Curtis went on to a successful show business career of her own. The six motion pictures of Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh includes “Houdini” (1953), “The Black Shield of Falworth” (1954), “The Vikings” (1958), “The Perfect Furlough” (1958), “Who Was That Lady?” (1960), and “Pepe” (1960).
