My Review

“The Undefeated” is a western drama about a clash between small Union and Confederate divisions at the end of the Civil War. Director Andrew V. McLaglen (“Shenandoah” 1965) put together an entertaining western with something of a confusing storyline. The show was taken from a muddled screenplay by James Lee Barrett, based on a story by Stanley L. Hough.

The entertaining part of the movie is due to the head of the cast, the always popular John Wayne, even though this film is in the declining part of his career. The Duke’s talents were running on all cylinders right to the end. His talented co-stars also played a part, which includes Rock Hudson, Roman Gabriel, Lee Meriwether, Merlin Olson, Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr., Paul Fix, Royal Dano, John Agar, Dub Taylor, Guy Raymond, Pedro Armendariz Jr., Marian McCargo, Bruce Cabot, Melissa Newman, and Tony Aguilar as General Rojas.

The watchable motion picture “The Undefeated” was a flop at the box office for 20th Century Fox. It was filmed in the Sierra de Organos National Park in Zacatecas, Mexico.
