My Review

Elvis Presley’s second-to-last movie was quite an engaging affair. “The Trouble with Girls” is the story of a traveling entertainment group’s visit to a small town in Iowa in 1927. Director Peter Tewksbury (“Stay Away, Joe” 1968) put together the film with good production values, including creative filming techniques and authentic 1920’s costumes and sets. The King of Rock-and-Roll even sang a few numbers.

The strong cast behind Elvis includes Sheree North, Marlyn Mason, Edward Andrews, John Carradine, Vincent Price, Dabney Coleman, Joyce Van Patten, Nicole Jaffe, Frank Welker, John Rubinstein, Susan Olsen (Cindy Brady of “The Brady Bunch”), Anissa Jones (Buffy of “Family Affair”), and a cameo appearance by Dodger baseball Hall-of-Famer and center fielder Duke Snider as The Cranker.

The well written screenplay by Arnold Peyser and Lois Peyser was an interesting adaptation of the 1960 novel “Chautauqua” by Day Keene and Dwight Vincent Babcock. The watchable Elvis Presley vehicle “The Trouble with Girls” was only a modest hit at the box office for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
