My Review

Director Ida Lupino put together a light comedy in “The Trouble with Angles.” The story centers on the experiences of two teenage girls in a Catholic school run by nuns. Blanche Harris based the screenplay on the 1962 novel by Jane Trahey called “Life with Mother Superior.”

The star of the show is Hayley Mills in her first role after her departure from the fold at Walt Disney Pictures. This part showed a bit of a more of a rebellious side than her films with Disney. Rosalind Russell is perfect as the gruff but understanding Mother Superior. The co-stars include Binnie Barnes, Marge Redmond, Mary Wickes, Portia Nelson, June Harding, Barbara Hunter, Bernadette Withers, Margalo Gillmore, Camilla Sparv, Dolores Sutton, Marjorie Eaton, and Ronne Troup. Gypsy Rose Lee and Jim Hutton made cameo appearances.

Some actresses in this movie were also known for playing nuns in other projects. They include Marge Redmond (“Flying Nun” 1967-1970), Mary Wickes (“Sister Act” 1992), and Portia Nelson (“The Sound of Music” 1965). “The Trouble with Angels” was successful at the box office for Columbia Pictures. A sequel was released in 1968 called “Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows” starring Russell with Stella Stevens replacing Hayley Mills.
