My Review

“The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” is an adventure film telling the story of two drifters who team up with a veteran prospector and head up into the mountains to search for gold. They find trouble from ruthless bandits and from their own greed, mistrust, and insecurities. Director-screenwriter John Huston (“The Maltese Falcon” 1941) tightly directed this engrossing tale, adapted from the 1927 novel by B. Traven.

The stars of the show are Humphrey Bogart, Tim Holt, and Walter Huston. The three mesh well together, and with a supporting cast that includes Bruce Bennett, Barton MacLane, Alfonso Bedoya, and Arturo Soto Rangel. There were uncredited cameo appearances by Jack Holt, Jay Silverheels, John Huston, and child actor Robert Blake as a boy who tries to sell lottery tickets to Boggie.

The watchable and engrossing “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” was popular at the picture show for Warner Bros. Pictures. It was nominated for four Oscars, winning three: Best Director (J. Huston), Best Supporting Actor (W. Huston), and Best Screenplay (J. Huston). The non-winner was for Best Picture.

John Huston directed his own father, Walter Huston, for this role which won Walter an Academy Award. In 1985, John Huston directed his daughter, Angelica Huston, in “Prizzi’s Honor,” for which she was awarded the statuette for Best Supporting Actress. The Huston’s are the only family besides the Coppola’s to have three generations of Oscar winners: Carmine Coppola (1974), Francis Ford Coppola (1970), and Sophia Coppola (2003).
