My Review

“The Three Musketeers” is the story of Charles D’Artagnan, a rural Frenchman who travels to Paris for fun and adventure. He finds enormous amounts of both in this classic version of the 1844 novel of the same name by Alexander Dumas. Director George Sidney (“Anchors Away” 1945) skillfully put together this rendition as sort of a western-comedy, from an excellent screenplay by Robert Ardrey. It was nominated for one Academy Award for Best Cinematography (Technicolor) for Robert Planck.

The top-rate and all-star cast from the MGM stables includes Gene Kelly as D’Artagnan, Lana Turner as the Countess, Angela Lansbury as Queen Anne, Frank Morgan as King Louis, as well as Vincent Price, June Allyson, Van Heflin, Keenan Wynn, Gig Young, Reginald Owen, Marie Windsor, Robert Coote, and John Sutton. The watchable “The Three Musketeers” was popular in theatrical release and the sixth highest grossing movie of 1948 for producer Pandro S. Berman and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
