My Review

“The Third Man” is a film noir melodrama about an American writer traveling to post-World War II Vienna to seek out a friend who has offered him a job. However, upon arrival in Austria, he discovers that his friend is dead, and the drama proceeds from there. Director Carol Reed (“Odd Man Out” 1947) was sloppy at the helm of this motion picture, with a muddled storyline and inconsistent characterizations. The script by Graham Green was poorly written.

The actors’ performances were adequate enough, which includes Joseph Cotton, Orson Welles, Alida Valli, Trevor Howard, Bernard Lee, Wilfrid Hyde-White, Robert Brown, Erich Ponto, and Geoffrey Keen. The unwatchable and odd movie “The Third Man” did have some success in theaters for producers Carol Reed and David O. Selznick, London Films, and Selznick Releasing Organization. It won a single Academy Award for Best Cinematography (Robert Krasker), probably due to the use of odd camera angles and shadowy scenes.
