My Review

“The Thing” is a science fiction horror movie about an American research station in Antarctica invaded by an extra-terrestrial lifeform that invades, then imitates, other life forms. Horror film “expert” John Carpenter (“Escape From New York” 1981) directed a film filled with scifi drama and lots of gory scenes that, quite frankly, appears fake. “The Thing” is basically a cheap version of Ridley Scott’s “Alien” from 1979. The adequate screenplay was written by Bill Lancaster, adapted from the 1939 novel “Who Goes There?” by John W. Campbell.

The stars of the show are Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David, Richard Dysart, Richard Masur, T. K. Carter, David Clennon, Charles Hallahan, Peter Maloney, Donald Moffat, Joel Polis, Thomas Waites, and Adrienne Barbeau in an uncredited role as the voice of the chess computer. She is the only female cast member, and was married to director Carpenter at the time. The somehow watchable example of mediocre science fiction “The Thing” made a very small profit at the box office for The Turman-Foster Company and Universal Pictures. It was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Musical Score (Ennio Morricone).
