My Review

Eddie Redmayne won the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of famed physicist Dr. Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything.” Redmayne delivered a very inspiring performance as one of the world’s most brilliant men, who was stricken with motor neuron disease (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease). The screenplay by Anthony McCarten reportedly sugarcoated the personality of rough-edged Hawking quite a bit.

Director James Marsh (“Shadow Dancer” 2012) struck a balance at depicting Hawking’s scientific achievements and his personal life. The screenplay was adapted from his first wife Jane Wilde Hawking’s 2007 memoir “Traveling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen.” Actress Felicity Jones played Jane Hawking, and other cast includes Charlie Cox, Emily Watson, Simon McBurney, David Thewlis, Maxine Peake, Harry Lloyd, and Frank Leboeuf. Stephen Hawking provided his own computerized voice.

“The Theory of Everything” was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning one. It was successful in theatrical release for Working Title Films.
