My Review

Director Julie Taymor (“Across the Universe” 2007) takes on a play by Bill Shakespeare and comes up with a great big yawner. “The Tempest” is sluggish and slow, with the viewer feeling every one of the 120 minutes. The only person to blame is Taymor, who also produced and wrote the screenplay.

A bright spot is the cast headed by Helen Mirren, who has top billing as Prospera, the Dutchess of Milan. The talented Oscar winning actress is always a joy to watch. Co-stars include Djimon Hounsou, Felicity Jones, David Strathairn, Tom Conti, Reeve Carney, Chris Cooper, Alan Cumming, Alfred Molina, Russell Brand.

Despite another plus being filmed on the Big Island of Hawaii and Lanai, we cannot recommend this film from Touchstone Pictures, where The Walt Disney Company sends most of its unwatchable and unwanted movies. “The Tempest” was a huge flop at the box office, but did receive one Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design.
