My Review

Producer-director Tony Scott (“Top Gun” 1986) put together a decent remake of the 1974 movie “The Taking of Pelham 123.” Scott and screenwriter Brian Helgeland kept the action and storyline moving in this tale of a New York City subway train dispatcher who is drafted into the role of negotiator after a thug takes control of a train full of hostages.

The cast comes on at full strength, including Denzel Washington as the dispatch guy turn arbitrator, John Travolta as the lead hijacker, John Turturro as a policeman, Luis Guzman as one of the criminals, Michael Rispoli as Denzel’s boss, and James Gandolfini as the Mayor of New York City.

“The Taking of Pelham 123” was based on the 1974 film, as well as the 1998 made-for-television movie and the 1973 novel “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three” by John Godey. This 2009 version was modestly successful in theatrical release for Scott Free Productions, Columbia Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and Sony Pictures Releasing.
