My Review

“The Sun Also Rises” is a drama film about an American journalist who served in World War I and decides to settle in Paris after the war. He becomes involved with several people, who help the themes of alcoholism and friendship appear high on the list of the movie’s subject matter. Director Henry King (“The Song of Bernadette” 1943) turned out a fairly watchable film, with a respectable script by Peter Viertel, adapted from the 1926 novel of the same name by Ernest Hemingway.

The cast includes Tyrone Power, Ava Gardner, Mel Ferrer, Errol Flynn, and Eddie Albert playing people who spend lots of time boozing it up. Filmed on location in France and Spain, two actors partake in the famous running of the bulls in Pamplona. Robert Evans, later a movie producer who was made head of Paramount Pictures in 1967, made his screen debut here as bullfighter Pedro Romero. There were some hair-raising scenes with him (or a stunt double) in the bull fighting arena.

The watchable movie was a modest success in theatrical release for producer Darryl F. Zanuck and 20th Century Fox, allowing them to make money which helps to make ends meet when “The Sun Also Rises.”
